Welcome
Records show that a small Scout Troop existed in Ashtead prior to 1914 but closed at the outbreak of war.
It had started in 1911, just four years after Brownsea Island and numbered thirteen boys. Their spirit must have lingered on to be reborn just a few years later in 1920 when the new group was officially registered
as the eighteenth troop in the, then, district of Sutton. As the only Troop in Ashtead, it immediately became known as 1st Ashtead absorbing 3rd Ashtead as recently as 2001.
The 1st Ashtead (Pelham) Scout Group has run continuously ever since with a membership of sixty in at its start, rising to over two hundred and twenty in 2005 at the time of our 85th Anniversary celebrations. The Group is named Pelham in honour of the founding Scout Leader. Pelham Douglas Maitland.
The Group currently has in excess of two hundred members, including the ‘Explorer unit’ but excluding ‘Network’. The Group runs seven sections – two Beaver Colonies, two Cub Scout packs, two Scout Troops and an Explorer Unit. We have a strong leadership team comprised entirely of volunteers. We have a Group Executive Committee to look after all of the ‘non-scouting’ issues. At the present time, there are over forty adult volunteers involved in leading or helping the group.
The Objective Of The Scout Association:
To promote the development of young people in achieving their full, physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national and international communities, through the provision of an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by Adult Leadership.
